On Monday, CNN staff members shared their sorrow and condolences following the news that senior investigative correspondent Drew Griffin had passed away at the age of 60 following a protracted battle with cancer. Griffin had been reporting for CNN for more than three decades.
According to his family, Griffin passed away on Saturday. He was an esteemed investigative reporter who was known for his work that had a significant impact on a variety of themes. In a statement sent out to CNN employees on Monday, CNN CEO Chris Licht paid respect to the life and career of former CNN anchor and correspondent Larry Griffin. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Licht added in the email that “Drew’s passing is a sad loss to CNN and to our whole profession.”
“Drew was a highly recognized investigative journalist, and his work had a great impact. He personified the objective of our organization in every way possible via his work. It was important to him to discover the truth and to hold those in authoritative positions accountable. He was a man of strong character who never compromised his integrity. After working as an investigative reporter for CNN Los Angeles for a number of years prior to joining CNN in 2004, Griffin served in that capacity for the network.
His long list of accomplishments includes winning a Peabody Award in 2015 for his investigative reporting on delays at Veterans Affairs facilities that contributed to patient fatalities and led to the resignation of the VA secretary. Griffin was recognized for his reporting on a variety of topics, including Hurricane Katrina, allegations of fraud leveled against Trump University, and the aftermath of the riot that occurred on January 6th, among many other stories.
He was the recipient of four Emmy awards. Don Lemon, who is a host on CNN’s morning show, wept as he announced Griffin’s death on the network and referred to him as “our colleague and friend and veteran respected CNN journalist.” Griffin was a longtime employee of CNN.
